Sony to Provide Digital Copies of UMD Games

In case you didn't notice, Sony's forthcoming PSP Go doesn't have a UMD drive, as future games will be available both on the much-maligned disc format and as digital downloads begging the question: if you upgrade how do you play older games purchased on UMD? The answer, Sony has said as speaking to Gizmodo, it that an upgrade program of some sort is being planned.

Sony's Director of Hardware Marketing, John Koller, said that the company expects a fair number of existing PSP owners to upgrade to the new console and, as such, are working on "a good will program" to enable owners of UMD-based games to get a digital copy, playable on the Go. Koller also said that, contrary to some speculation, there will be no ripping of UMDs to get a digital copy but, rather, those will be distributed via the PSN store. That makes perfect sense after Sony has gone to the trouble of making it accessible on the Go in the first place.
The implication is that, just like Portable Copy on Blu-rays, where (some) physical discs come with a digital version for use on a portable media player, UMDs will likely come with a code for a digital copy of the same game. There's also a suggestion that not every PSP title would be included in the program, but I can't think of more than a dozen older PSP games I'd want on the newer console anyway, so that probably won't be a problem for 99 per cent of PSP Go owners.
