Trend Micro Touts Web Security For PSP & PS3

Quite what 'web security' a games console needs I couldn't tell say, but Trend Micro apparently knows. If you have a PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Portable Trend Micro wants is offering to provide that security, albeit for a fee.

Having been offered on a trial basis since late 2007, Trend Micro will be offering its PSP and PS3 web security offerings on a 'pay per use' basis, costing either £14.95 for the PS3 or £26.95 for the combined PSP and PS3 package. Dedicated, PSP-only pricing will be announced closer to July, when Trend Micro will actually start charging for it.
The security on offer comes in two varieties: Trend Micro Kids' Safety and Trend Micro Web Security. The former works to stop children - or, in fact, any PS3 user - from accessing certain websites based on pre-determined filters; such as sites with Sexual, Gambling and Weapons content.
Web Security uses domain authentication to protect users against phishing or hijacking sites, blocking access and ensuring personal data isn't transmitted to the wrong place. Common sense should offer the same level of protection for the most part, but over-cautiousness is hardly a sin.

Should that be the other way round or are Trend having a laugh?
