PS3 Overtakes Wii In Japanese Sales

As surprising as it may sound, before March it had been 16 months since the PS3 last outsold the Wii in Japan. Now it's only one month since, during a recession, the most expensive of the current generation of consoles beat what is inarguably the most popular.

According to research group Enterbrain, the PS3 shifted 146,948 units, beating the Wii's 99,335 and Xbox 360's 43,172 combined. The boost is largely attributed to the release of Resident Evil 5 and Yakuza 3; the appeal of the latter being lost in translation, for me at least.
Okay, so putting my Hat of Realism on for a second it has to be conceded that one month of superior sales in almost a year and a half isn't exactly going to mark the PS3 as a significant threat to the Wii's dominance. However, the timing of the lead does reinforce the idea that compelling games on the platform are needed to boost PS3 sales. And with exclusive titles such as Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain to come this year, Sony may well see a trend emerging from Marche's sales results.
