Sony Launches April Fools' $99 PlayStation 2

Quick note to all technology companies: never ever release anything solid on April Fools. We're all too jaded and too wary to give you our full attention...

Thankfully then Sony prefaced this ill-timed product announcement with an official blog post late yesterday: the PlayStation 2 will be launched for under $100 on 1 April.

"For the first time ever, PlayStation 2 will be offered at a price point under $100 (that's $99.99 MSRP, to be exact), starting April 1!" said excited hardware marketing director John Koller. "In the gaming industry, the typical lifecycle for a console is around five years, but... with the original PlayStation and now PlayStation 2, we've proven that consumers can rely on our platforms for their gaming and entertainment needs for at least a decade."

Koller also highlighted that the console's gaming library will soon surpass 1,900 titles - a monstrous number and with notable highlights still to come including MLB '09, Ghostbusters: The Video Game, Guitar Hero Metallica and MotorStorm: Arctic Edge. As for the PS2 itself, that has shipped more than 140m units - nearly 3x the number of Nintendo Wiis to put it in some perspective.

Of course the alternative argument is simple: save up a few more weeks and buy an Xbox 360! The Arcade edition now retails for just $199 (less online and a mere £100 in Japan) and I know which console would bring a greater smile to my face in 2009. Then again, I dream of Intel SSDs and Pioneer Kuros so just ignore me!
