PSP Gran Turismo "Moving Forward"

Back when the PlayStation Portable was launched (and still considered an awesome product) Polyphony Digital teased us all with promises Gran Turismo for the PSP. Four years on we still have nothing to show for it but, in an interview with IGN, Kazunori Yamauchi, Polyphony Digital CEO, is still insisting that GT: PSP is in the pipeline.

When initially announced as in development it was anticipated that the PSP-centric Gran Turismo game would be a port of the PS2 title Gran Turismo 4. Whether the game as promised now has anything in common with the title is unclear, but it seems fairly unlikely. I can't see many developers sitting on a game for four years and not doing something pretty special.
The bigger issue, as I see it, is that the PSP's hay day is long past. As much as Gran Turismo has stood as a flagship title on the various PlayStation consoles as long as I can remember, but launching a flagship title onto a portable console long since past its peak seems almost counter intuitive.
Perhaps there's an underlying indication the next-generation PSP isn't too far away.
