Xbox 360: Now Just £100 at Sainsbury's Comments

You can now almost buy 3 xbox 360's for the price of a PS3.. Sony have a problem on their hands. Why won't they drop the price in the UK?

it figures that the first comment is bringing sony into the equation.
the xbox in question is the the entry level xbox which is rather stripped down and lacking that of the more expensive xbox 360s, its aimed at casual gamers, where as the ps3 isnt... i think its that simple....
the xbox 360 elite is the version which was released as direct competition to the ps3 and yes it is still cheaper than a ps3 but thats what you should be talking about when you compare the two...

It still irks me somewhat that people forget the Blu-Ray drive when comparing X360 to PS3. Take a X360 (as joeyb says, the Elite should be considered the direct competitor to the PS3, but it potentially even holds for the Premium and the Arcade) and then buy one of the best Blu-Ray players on the market (no the HD-DVD add-on doesn't count). THEN compare the total price with a PS3.

Only then can you compare the two consoles.

I think the normal (pro/premium?) 360 compares well to the ps3, blu-ray excepted. the elite only adds a bigger hard drive. the normal 360 includes everything needed for a great experience out of the box.

i'd love a ps3 but for this price i can't see a reason to spend that much more, again blu-ray excepted. for £300 you'd have a 360 with 2 controllers and 3 or 4 AAA games.

@ChaosDefinesOrder I didn't realise that you need a BluRay drive to play games on a 360.

You can't play Halo or Gears on a PS3, blu-ray or not. The PS3 is a nice piece of hardware (nicer than the 360) but it's the games that count.

blu ray drives or not, the fact is none of my favourite films are on blu ray at the moment, and i have my reservations as to whether they'll ever be released, so for me (and many people) a blu ray drive is irrelevant.

don't forget you'll need to fork out for an hdmi cable if you want to see your blu-ray films/games in high definition

An HDMI cable can be had for under a fiver so that's hardly a major expense.

blu ray yeah so what (I am representing gamers) why do I need blu ray this is a games console people buy it games and to be honest I am not paying more than £15 for a movie which doesn't look so much different on a 32'' Tv (which the majority of xbox/PS3 gamers that I know have as their gaming tv) and that I will only watch a maximum of 10 times. Games are where its at yeah the PS3 is technically better but in practice it ain't worth the dough

Blu-ray seems on paper to be the PS3 coup de gras in the current console war but were microsoft to just offer the option to save HD downloaded content to a hard drive it would make this point moot. OK so there are obviously the DRM implications to consider but if the Redmond giant can unify Zunes, Windows MCE and the Xbox into one family like Ballmer is currently threatening, it could open the way to watching this content on more than one device, which would be nice.

However, with games like Mass Effect out there who has time to watch films anyway?

Sod blue ray, i dont wanna watch films, i want to play games, and for £100 i'd happily buy another xbox. why would someone fork out £300 for a ps3 when they can get a xbox for £100.

@ joeyb. If people aint got the money for an Elite of a PS3 this is the obvious choice and sony should be brought into the eqution at this news cos its in the same market as the xbox!!

Personally, id rather pay for HD downloads, than a blu ray player and then the movies. Thanks microsoft for giving me the choice!

@ sprinc4 - Why don't you want to watch films? A little culture might do you some good.
@ Andrew Violet - You can't compare the Arcade Xbox360 with a PS3 because it's more than just a games console. It's a high-end piece of AV gear for people who want to take advantage of HD & surround sound media. A more interesting comparison would be with the DS light. Time for Nintendo to reduce the price of its handheld?

The PS3 is a decent Blu-Ray player, but if you want high end, you wouldn't touch a PS3 with a bargepole .
Everyone who's into video seriously knows that the PS3's motion reproduction is not as fluid as a high end player, and the colour reproduction definitely is not as vivid as some of the high end competition.
YES the PS3 represents decent value for money if you happen to want to casually watch BluRay - but if you're an obsessive videophile, then no - It does not cut it.

At the end of the day they are GAMES consoles - the media playing ability is an advantage, but really we buy them to play games on, so bringing the BR drive into it isn't really fair, maybe stating 360 games are stunted by the lack of space.. but actually saying the BR in itself helps hugely - well i'm sorry, but you are wrong for 90% of the british population.

How many BR discs are actually sold each week?!

@The Mighty Ben - Im cultued up enough thanks. I do watch films, i download them and stream them to my xbox. But i wouldnt care if my xbox didnt allow me to do this, i wanted my xbox to play games. The next peice of movie watching piece i buy would be a HD streaming device (which my xbox can do anyways). I dont need or want blu ray.
