yeah, ok. sony makes a few mistakes (that couldn't be predicted) and now sony haters are all over it. at least sony saw the problem and did something *cough* red ring of death and shortened warranties

To be fair to Sony (and i don't normally like being fair to big businesses) they reacted very quickly to this and pulled the download off their servers. Also, if you do own a delaystation you should be rather good at waiting by now ;)
Still, Sony must be rather emabarrased and i imagine it will cost them a pretty penny putting it right with affected customers...

Assuming the problem is, as all the currently available information suggests, related to hard drive data, then there's no way Sony can test for that because they don't know what people are putting on their hard drives. Of course Sony should implement their boot system such that what's on the hard drive doesn't matter.
The idea that Sony should be expected to plan for what users have done to their systems is, frankly, ridiculous though.

I'll have my fingers crossed until the next update as I downloaded it before it was pulled by Sony.
I recently updated my original US 60GB PS3 to a 320GB so hopefully nothing will go wrong.

It'll take as large a drive as you care to fit, as long as the it can fit in the physical constraints of the consoles drive bay. For example, a 320GB Fuji 2.5in drive won't fit in. I have a 250GB Samsung drive in my previously-60GB PS3.

That's what I was asking Hugo, what's the largest drive that accommodates the PS3's required drive dimension. I mean I'm no expert but the slim, notebook drive form factor that the PS3 takes is up to about what, 320GB or 500GB now? Any model recommendations?
I do realise I could just hook up a massive external one via USB but I'd rather not have some dull drive sticking out the stylish console - sort of inelegant for the living room.

Bravo Sony, now you really did it! So, does that mean that we should not download this update and wait (that all we seem to keep on doing) for a proper update. Maybe Sony should have left the console the way it was improving solely on the download speed instead of copying Live (Trophies AND XMB, come one, who are they kidding now?).
Where is Sony's real own innovation? They keep on talking about it, yet we've seen nothing.
