Spore To Be Released On The Wii

To pervert a popular rhyme: I scream, you scream, we all scream for Spore. You can keep Crysis, Call of Duty 4 and their ilk because I am head over heels in love with the game.

If, miraculously, you haven't heard about it, probably by dint of being one of those flowery shirt-wearing, Mario-loving, Wii-owner types that doesn't do computer games, then your feeble excuses are at an end. Will Wright, the games creator has announced the intention to bring the game to Nintendo's hugely popular console.

The news came from an interview with Guardian Unlimited, in which Wright discussed various aspects of his game heritage, which most notably includes the ubiquitous The Sims franchise. Wright's motives for porting to the Wii are best expressed in his own words.

"The only next gen system I've seen is the Wii - the PS3 and the Xbox 360 feel like better versions of the last, but pretty much the same game with incremental improvement but the Wii feels like a major jump - not that the graphics are more powerful, but that it hits a completely different demographic."

For those who don't know, the premise of Spore is that you get to control the evolution of a species from a single-celled organism in the primordial ooze all the way to a galaxy-spanning super-race to extinction. The steps in between are based entirely on the way you allow them to unfold. Considering the sandbox style gameplay which Spore is offering, it does make sense that the Wii's demographic might be more interested in the game than that of the Xbox 360 or PS3. Along with Metroid and Super Mario Galaxy, Spore may just persuade me I want a Wii after all.
