While it is of course a well established fact that 86.6 per cent of statistics are invented or misrepresented purely to prove a point, the results of one particular survey carried out recently by the Denizens of Digitivity have rather aroused my interest. According to results compiled from over 1,000 participants between the 7th and 11th of this month, more women own games consoles than men.

Five per cent more in fact. While 39 per cent of male respondents confessed to owning either an Xbox 360, Playstation 3 or Wii, 44 per cent of women owned to the same. It seems that the ever growing opinion that the typical gamer stereotype of an 18-34 year old, white, male (hey, that's me!) is increasingly out of date.

The result is put down to a growing amount of women-folk enjoying such games as Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero and Wario Ware: Smooth Moves. Indeed, Nintendo's Wii is claimed to have had a large bearing on these results.

Games developers have traditionally aimed 'hard-core' titles, such as the upcoming Halo 3 and supremely popular Half Life at a male audience, which I may, unwittingly, have confirmed by the titles I picked out as noteworthy at a recent Xbox event.

It is worth pointing out though that, at least currently, the big money is still in software market, sure female gamers might have more consoles, but the enthusiast market buys more games - and that doesn't look set to change any time soon.
