We've been waiting a long time for this one, but finally after much ado about nothing Immersion Technology's ownership of the patents needed to make the device, not to mention a $90 million dollar settlement by Sony, we finally have Dual Shock for the Playstation 3, having been announced at the Tokyo Games Show. I believe 'huzzah' is the best word to describe the news.

Aesthetically the new controller will be exactly the same, discounting a logo and while we can expect a bit more weight to be added, the Dual Shock 3 should still be a fair way lighter than the Xbox 360's offering, which feels like a sack of bricks in comparison.

Battery life will probably also be affected but many will find that sacrifice worthwhile for the added immersion gleamed by having your controller squirm around in ones hand like a fish out of water.

Games slated to offer support include Echochrome, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Online and Devil May Cry 4. We would be very surprised of older games didn't get patched with new functionality as well, Motorstorm being an obvious candidate.

The downside to this announcement is that while Sony's native Japan are set to see the new controller within a couple of months, we in the UK won't be able to get our hands on one until spring 2008. Of course as the games which will utilise Dual Shock aren't likely to be available until then either, the problem isn't as large as you might think.
