Here's a turn up for the books: while the PlayStation 3 appeared to have to most apathetic launch of the next generation consoles actual UK sales figures show it has been easily the most successful. What gives?

For the record Sony reports official figures of no less 165,000 shipped units (from a launch stock of 220,000) in the first two days after launch. This dwarfs the 105,000 Nintendo Wiis sold in the two days following its release and stomps all over the 70,000 Xbox 360's Microsoft totted up in its first 48 hours.

There is a 'but' however and it is a monumentally big but and that is: BUT how many Xbox 360s and Nintendo Wiis would have sold had Microsoft and Nintendo been able to match demand?

On the one hand Microsoft had no stock because it was determined to be first out by as big a margin as possible and on the other Nintendo simply couldn't stock the Wii fast enough considering it had to fuel a global launch over a three week period.

Now contrast this with Sony which launched the PlayStation 3 in one half of the world four months ago before moving onto Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Africa and Australasia... talk about a staggered roll out.

So, as the old saying goes, there are lies, damned lies and statistics and while I'm pleased Sony has been able to clock up some impressive sales figures after what appeared to be an internationally lukewarm 'second' launch they don't tell the whole story.

Then again, do they ever?

Thanks to regular reader and all round superhero Andy for the tip off. Ladies, I hear he bench presses cars at weekends...
