We’ve been hearing about potential upgrades to the Xbox 360 for a while now and finally one of them has surfaced.

A brand spanking new DVD drive wasn’t the part we expected (CPUs and HDDs were all the gossip) but I guess we’ll take what we can get. The drive itself is made by BenQ and has the product code: VAD6038.

No official specs are available yet but it is said to decrease loading times. More importantly, however, is the assertion that the drive runs whisper quiet and – given that the two previous incarnations made by Hitachi-LG and Toshiba-Samsung DVD had all the acoustic finesse of a Jumbo Jet – this will be welcome news to ear drums globally.

Apparently Microsoft has actually been shipping the drive inside a proportion of Xbox 360s since November (Xbox-Scene managed to get a snap confirming one - above) but will now ramp up production.

So if you got an Xbox 360 for Christmas and you’ve already had eight migraines, 15 headaches and passed out twice then it looks like you lucked out. For the rest of you the odds of acoustic bliss should now begin to rise…
