It seems that all the mastery of undercover journalism has gone out of the window this week. First it was the Luxemburg economic minister blathering about iTunes and now a Dell exec has candidly revealed it is working on a portable gaming console.

Abizar Vakharia, Dell’s Head of Gaming Products, is the loose lipped suit this time having confirmed the company has plans afoot to challenge the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS with a device of its own.

"You know, that's definitely one that's on the radar screen," he said, in a response that no doubt flabbergasted the questioner "but we have no plans to talk about anything today."

No plans obviously, other than to stun the IT world with such a major announcement.

Saying that, history suggests Dell’s prospects in this portable gaming market aren’t good. Just last year it shut down its wholly unsuccessful (and quite frankly, naff) line of MP3 players (one pictured above - urgh!) after failing to gain any kind of market share. You didn’t know Dell once made MP3 players? See my point…

Still more competition is no bad thing in a sector dominated by just two companies. Of course, Microsoft has said it plans to make that three companies so Dell will certainly have its work cut out.

Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft and Dell…. Hmmmn. I couldn’t pick a winner but I’m pretty sure I can pick a loser…
