The first official sales figures are in on the PlayStation 3 and it is doing well, but no where near as well as Sony predicted.

According to the company, 15 January was the day the console sold its two millionth unit: a number Sony had predicted it would hit by 31 December. Given
the console only launched globally in mid November this calculation is seriously off.

Interestingly, Sony has admitted that the 2006 2m sales target was made after the decision to delay the PS3’s European launch. Still, given the hefty price mark up in this region, you would think choosing to supply additional cheaper units first should have helped shift more consoles not less.

The announcement is not all bad news however since the PS3 has sold more units than the uber-popular PlayStation 2 did during its first months on the market. That said this isn’t an entirely level playing field because far more people play video games now than they did seven years ago.

Significantly, the disappointing figures have led other speculators to drastically cut their sales predictions for the console. Investment bank Nomura, for example, forecast 6m PS3s would have found homes by March but now thinks this is more likely to be 4.5m. Likewise its April 2007 to March 2008 total of 16m units is all the way down to 10m units.
