There are many things Nintendo’s marvellous DS and revised DS Lite can do but one of the major omissions was music playback. Notice I said ‘was’.

Riding on the crest of a wave following the successful US launch of its next gen Wii console, the company has announced the ‘Nintendo MP3 player’ which – similar to the ‘Play-Yan’ – is an MP3 adaptor for both versions of the DS as well as the GBA and Game Boy Micro. It is shaped like a GBA game cartridge and accepts SD memory cards from which it will locate and play MP3 files.

Different player skins will be offered (including a Mario-themed one) while the adaptor itself features another headphone port though Nintendo hasn’t firmed up whether any of its consoles will be able to play games and music simultaneously.

Nintendo will ship the MP3 player with a 512MB SD card but users will be free to utilise larger capacities. As for the files themselves they have to be added to the SD card manually using a PC. Unfortunately – unlike the Play-Yan – is it not compatible with video files.

That said, the add-on will be cheap shipping for just £20 including VAT on 8 December. Hmmmn, now does that date ring a bell…?
