World Cup fever isn’t just causing ever soccer loving human being on this planet to lose his marbles, it’s also leading to a fair few manufacturers misplaces theirs too. With official tie-ins ranging from the usual (footballs, videos, etc) to the bizarre (toilets seats have been reported) and Microsoft has – as per usual – jumped in for part of the action.

The technically irrelevant but sheer marketing genius that is the Xbox 360 faceplate means that the company can produce limited edition machines for any event it wishes. So World Cup = World Cup Xbox 360.

Available from the unsettlingly specific date of 27 April the bundle will be identical to that of a typical Premium except for the obvious World Cub themed faceplate, an Adidas World Cup bandana and a copy of FIFA 2006 World Cup Germany. A reasonable $430 dollar price tag has been mooted but we don’t yet know how that will translate over here. An initial shipment of 10,000 will head for Japan with more to follow around the world if they prove popular.

Sadly Gates’ boys have declined to produce World Cup editions of Xbox 360’s in the specific colours of each of the nations taking part which I feel is a shame because I hear demand for next generation consoles doesn’t get any more ferocious than in Costa Rica (and by ‘demand’ I mean black market and by ‘ferocious’ I mean insistent young men asking you for them with machetes).
