In football, managers and chairmen get repeatedly irked when reporters doubt what they say. “He’s not for sale!” will say a club spokesman, “Why can’t this be the end of it?” Because the player in question is inevitably sold by the end of the week, that’s why you muppet. The same can be said for technology companies. Nintendo repeatedly told us it had no plans to redesign the DS then, guess what, it has redesigned the DS…

Now let me stress that the shots you see above are not confirmed as the final design, the games legend is still at the mock up stage but it appears to have finalised the specs. The new ‘Nintendo DS Lite’ (less calories) is smaller and lighter with one third lopped off the size and more than 20 per cent chopped from the weight.

219g (opposed to 275g on the original DS) and 133 x 73.9 x 21.5mm (currently 148.7 x 84.7 x 28.9mm) are the revised vital stats though the power of the console will remain the same to circumvent the need for multiple versions of the same title. With a release date penned for the beginning of March I’m going to stick my neck out and say Nintendo is going to have to go some if the final look isn’t at least heavily influenced by this Apple-heavy styling. After all, if world is white obsessed right now, why make the effort to be different…?!

Personally, I have always thought the DS was an entertaining if pretty fugly piece of kit. The redesigned version may not have me swooning, but it’s a step in the right direction.
