Panasonic finished off proceedings with an announcement from the President of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd,. Mr Ohtsubo. The big announcement was Panasonic's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 300,000 tonnes over the next three years. The result will be a total CO2 emissions level of 3.68 million tonnes in fiscal year 2010, compared with 3.98 million tonnes in fiscal year 2007. Panasonic also intends to bring this number down to 3.60 million tonnes by 2011. Although the overall number is still huge, the important point is that things are moving in the right direction.

In order to achieve this reduction in greenhouse gas emissions Panasonic has introduced its Eco Ideas concept. Eco Ideas is split into three sections.

  • Eco Ideas for Products: Panasonic plans to deliver energy efficient products and will accelerate development of energy saving technologies. The company wants to lead the market with energy efficient products, while eliminating products with poor energy efficiency from its portfolio.
  • Eco Ideas for Manufacturing: Panasonic will reduce CO2 emissions produced by its manufacturing processes. The commitment to reduce CO2 will not be limited to manufacturing however.
  • Eco Ideas for Everybody, Everywhere: Panasonic will encourage the adoption of environmental awareness both in local communities and globally. After the presentation Panasonic opened the Eco Ideas corner at the Panasonic Center Tokyo, allowing the public to come and learn about environmentally aware technology.

Ultimately it's very fashionable for technology companies to talk about environmentally friendly working practices, but Panasonic is clearly taking this very seriously. Whether it's the elimination of lead from its TVs or the commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it seems like Panasonic is willing to spend the money to go green. Hopefully I'll find myself back in Japan in 2010 to find out whether Mr Ohtsubo manages to hit his target.
