Continuing its commitment to environmental technology, Panasonic then showed me around its EU house, back in Tokyo. The EU branding is an amalgamation of Eco and UD, with the latter standing for Universal Design. The Universal Design aspect relates to technology that is easily accessible to everyone from children to the elderly, there's also a strong emphasis on simplicity.

Just outside the front door there was a wind and solar power generation system. This, along with solar panels on the roof generates enough power to run some of the lighting and security cameras in the house.
Things didn't get off to the best start, with the RFID activated front door refusing to open initially. The RFID tag was embedded in a mobile phone and it took a great deal of waving and gesticulating with said phone before the door conceded to open and allow us access to the house.

Energy is constantly monitored in the UD house, allowing the residents to make energy efficient decisions in their daily lives. The implementation of a home fuel cell co-generation system also allows for cheaper and more environmentally friendly energy consumption. Meanwhile vacuum insulation technology is used to keep all the heat inside the house, thus saving the amount of energy needed to heat the home, not to mention reducing the cost.

The bathroom is configured to suit the needs of everyone in the household, whether they want a brisk "wake up" shower, or a relaxing spa bath. The control panel outside the bathroom allows you to configure everything from the heat of the water to the mood lighting - anyone who's ever stepped under a shower that was either too hot or too cold will appreciate this no end.
