The reason for our jaunt across to Osaka was that Panasonic wanted to show off its new plasma manufacturing facility in Amagasaki. The new plant only went online in July, and is situated directly next to the existing factory - the build cost Panasonic 180 billion Yen (around £755,000,000). The picture below shows just how massive the facility is, with both PDP plants side by side.

Now that's a huge investment by anyone's standards and goes a long way to highlight Panasonic's commitment to plasma. But despite the fact that this new plant has only just opened, Panasonic has already started work on another manufacturing facility that's as big as the existing two factories put together. The illustration below shows that the new plant will be located very close to the existing factories in Amagasaki, with an estimated production yield of one million panels per month!

The construction of the new plant is scheduled to start in November, with production starting in May 2009. This plant will be the largest plasma factory in the world, and combined with the other two Amagasaki facilities, Panasonic will be able to produce close to two million panels per month (based on 42in glass). The cost of the new plant is approximately 280 billion Yen (around £1.2 billion).

Now, I have to admit that I was somewhat shocked at the prospect of Panasonic producing two million TVs per month - surely the demand couldn't justify that kind of production level. However, Panasonic stated that the expected worldwide demand of TVs in 2010 will be around 200 million per year, with an estimated 65 per cent of that total being flat panel screens!
