Standard DVD definitely isn’t dead yet either and it’s truly amazing that Toshiba’s flagship DVD player, the SD-370E can be had for under £60! Not only is the SD-370E incredibly cheap, but it’s also packed with features. You get both component video and HDMI output, PAL progressive scan output and DVD upscaling to both 720p and 1080i. Toshiba has even thrown in DivX and MP3 playback into the bargain, which makes me question why the HD DVD players don’t support DivX playback.

Toshiba was also pushing its new line of DVD recorders with the stand out models being the DV-R17DT and RD-97DT. Both these recorders include digital and analogue TV tuners, a 7-day EPG, PAL progressive scan and timeslip recording.

Both units also sport HDMI outputs and will upscale DVDs to 720p, 1080i and 1080p. It’s somewhat strange that these recorders can upscale to 1080p but the flagship DVD player can only manage 1080i. Toshiba indicated that the DVD player market is so price sensitive now, that increasing the cost of the SD-370E even slightly to accommodate 1080p output could well have swayed potential buyers towards the competition.

The RD97DT also has a 250GB hard disk inside it, allowing for up to 424 hours of recording time. Recorded footage can then be offloaded to DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW for archiving. Both recorders should hit retail in June, but we’ll be bringing you full reviews as soon as we get hold of samples.
