Belkin has quite a selection of high quality cabling and switch gear in its Pure AV range. The standout feature of the Pure AV line is that Belkin doesn’t charge the earth like some traditional AV cable manufacturers, but the products still offer a massive improvement in quality over the awful, cheap cables that are often shipped with AV components.

The Pure AV HDMI switcher definitely looks the part, finished in a metallic grey, this solid metal box looks fairly industrial in nature – just like most high-end AV components in fact. Measuring 182 x 77 x 24mm (WxDxH), the Belkin is a very compact solution. Of course it’s easier to create a small HDMI switcher since the audio and video are carried through the same small connector.

This little box supports just about every resolution you could need – 480i, 480p, 720i, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. Although 576i isn’t listed in the specs, I can’t remember seeing a device that outputs only 576i over HDMI.

The front of the switcher is adorned with a sleek, black plastic fascia. There are three green LEDs mounted in the fascia – one for each of the three inputs. There’s also a power indicator – another green LED – along with an IR receiver for the supplied remote control and an input select button.

Conspicuous by its absence is a power button, and don’t go thinking that there’s a power switch at the rear, because there isn’t. Basically there’s no way to actually switch the Belkin unit off, other than disconnecting it from the mains of course. I can’t help but think that this is a major omission – I have never encountered a single piece of AV kit that couldn’t at least be put into standby mode!
