Samsung has already impressed us with its Series 8 LCDs and its latest entrant into the plasma market looks like it could do the same. The 850 PAVV brings some decided improvements over its preceding series in terms of power consumption and lightness (for those that's important to) and a bunch of nifty features of note to everyone.

Available with either 50in and 58in panels, both with Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixel) resolutions, the 850 PAVVs feature USB ports from which MP3 and video files can be played, with XviD support as is becoming increasingly standard. The TV also has DLNA support, enabling network access to media content, too.

Those improvements over the previous generation of Samsung plasmas see a 20 per cent weight reduction and a 40 per cent improvement in power efficiency. The 50in plasma is a mere 29mm think, while the 59in TV is stated as being "50 percent thinner" than the model before, weighing in at 36kg.

Pricing and release information for the UK unavailable as yet. Hopefully the sets won't be.

Is that really the stand that comes with the set? If so, it's hideous!
