Following last year's deal with MGM, YouTube has announced plans to launch a sections on its site, which will group all of YouTube's 'premium' content together. This will include films and television programmes from broadcasters such as Sony, MGM, Lionsgate, CBS, Starz and the BBC.

TV shows on YouTube should benefit greatly from the improved navigation afforded by the new section. Content is not only categorised logically by genre and content provider, but also series are now grouped together in an episode listing.

The launch of the aptly named Shows and Movies coincides with the wider roll-out of in-stream adverts; not a coincidence I think. While I would rather not have any adverts at all, YouTube clearly needs to generate revenue somehow and if integrating ads into video playback is what's needed to remove them from around that content so be it.

Other nifty features include a button to "turn down the lights" when watching videos, casting a grey shadow over everything but the playing video and eliminating the glare of YouTube's usually white background. It's also possible to subscribe to a particular series, should you wish to watch it regularly.

A lot of the content is US-only, but there are a few exceptions, Fitzcarraldo for example. I certainly couldn't recommend using a proxy server to view everything else.
