Sony has announced that it will be shutting down its Field Emission Display development, primarily because of "difficulty in raising funds for the acquisition of plant and equipment investment."

FED has been widely touted as a true successor to CRT display technology; hardly surprising as it works on similar principles - though on a more compact scale. The technology was recently demonstrated running Gran Turismo 5 at 250fps and at that time Sony was suggesting production units would be available in 2009. Not any more.

Sony spin-off Field Emission Technologies is to be liquidated, the implication being that Sony is completely calling quits on FED - with no plans to resume development at a later date. Considering Sony was FED's biggest proponent, it seems unlikely anything will come of the technology now.

It looks like we're counting on OLED as our next-generation display technology.
