Sony's XEL-1 OLED TV has been on sale in the US and Japan for absolutely ages, but it has taken until now to be available in the UK. Nonetheless, apparently following the mantra of "better late than never" Sony has finally chosen to make the exuberantly priced TV available to us Brits.

Specification remains the same; a million-to-one contrast ratio and image quality that really is brilliant - you have to see it to believe it. But those plusses are compromised by a teeny tiny 11in screen size (3mm thin!) and a pretty paltry resolution of 960x 540 pixels.

The damage? £3,489. And as if that wasn't galling enough, consider the US and Japanese pricing of $2,499 and some ¥200,000 respectively - that's £1,750 and £1,600 converted even with the pound as weak as it is. Yes, Sony really is taking the proverbial - especially in the middle of a recession. Maybe someone thinks enough XEL-1s will be sold to reverse the company's financial state.

So, although I want one - it's a perfect kitchen TV price aside - I shall definitely not be buying an XEL-1.

How much for an 11" screen?! Sony have completely lost the plot and they can't pin it on the poor exchange rate! Bye bye Sony - it's been nice knowing you!

Sounds like a bargain!!! I'll take 2...1 for the bathroom and the other for the toilet. Oops, for a second there I thought I was a premiere league footballer.

No wonder they're bloody thin, the rest of TV is in its base. So, should we expect the same for future, bigger OLED screens? Wafer thin screen, jumbo base? At that price? What... more
