CES 2009: Samsung Unveils Ultra Thin LED HDTVs

The buzz about this year's Samsung event was huge. Clearly the pre-show buzz about a 6.5mm LED HDTV had peeked interest and arriving more than 30 minutes before the show still led to me joining the longest queue I've ever seen at a trade event. Was it worth it? I think so…


In unveiling the 6000, 7000 and 8000 LED HDTV's Samsung delivered high style sets but I hold back back because it kept silent on the majority of key specs. In short then what we learnt was the panels (which were incredibly slim but unspecified) will have integrated tuners, Full HD panels and a Yahoo! powered open platform to deliver online content via widgets (eBay, MySpace, YouTube, Flickr and the usual suspects are all signed up).


The 8000 series also sports a lightening 240Hz refresh rate (which will translate to 200Hz in the UK) with the 6000 and 7000 coming with 120Hz rates (again read: 100Hz for us) which are still no slouch. Samsung 'Wide Color Enhancer Pro' is the company's latest proprietary picture tech but we'll reserve judgement as previous gems like MotionPlus haven't really hit the mark. Finally greenies will be pleased to learn all meet Energy Star v3.0 guidelines.

So what was missing? Contrast ratio, response time, connectivity, dimensions, weight, pricing, availability, you name it. They do however look great and the demos were impressive so a qualified thumbs up from me.


Also worth a mention in the TV category are the company's six and seven LCD series with the former ranging from 19 inches right up to 55in and the latter offering 40in, 46in and 52in models. Like the LED lines they come with the Yahoo! widget engine while the seven series is equipped with a 240/200Hz refresh rate and the sixes get 120/100Hz. Wireless networking can also be supported via an optional USB dongle. Aside from that again all the specs were missing - though we will see them during the incredibly specific time frame of 'first half 2009'. What gives Samsung?

This is a wonderful technological achievement but I just wonder whether Average Joe could care less if his TV is 6.5mm or 50mm thick. Both are miles thinner than a CRT which is all... more
