Sky Prototyping 3D Broadcasts

Being as it is fairly ahead of the curve, albeit thanks to exclusivity contracts with US content providers, with high definition, it's no surprise to hear that Sky is thinking about the next step in broadcast technology - 3D.

Currently Sky is only testing the concept of 3D broadcasting, Lenz commenting: "we're just exploring right now, but the next step is going to be to find out whether 3DTV is something people are going to be interested in." However, should these trials be successful, there is every reason to expect that Sky would make 3D broadcast of its programmes available, when such footage exists.

Sky has demonstrated its tech working with clips recorded at a recent (unspecified) Champions League football game and international rugby matches, so it's not just a concept, at least.

One of the biggest obstacles in Sky's way, in the UK especially, is the lack of 3D-capable TVs to display and broadcast footage. Another complication is the number of different ways of recording and, thus, displaying 3D content works. Sky, for example, uses a pair of standard HD cameras next to each other, and then combines the images to create the 3D effect, which as per almost every other solution out there requires glasses to view.

We'll have to wait and see what emerges in the coming months. Any thoughts, people?
