Panasonic looks ready to step into 3D in a big way with its proposal to the Blu-ray Disc Association for a Blu-ray standard for 3D imagery and considered proposal for an HDMI standard for carrying 3D signals - as reported by Nikkei. As a maker of TVs, AV receivers and Blu-ray players Panasonic is in a pretty good position to benefit from (and contribute to the development of) what seems generally considered the next generation of visual technology after high definition.

The BDA reportedly hopes to have a standard in place by 2010. Panasonic's proposal is fairly simple in that it uses technology already extant in the currently used H.264 standard. H.264 already allows the use of two video channels (as required for 3D), which would be pretty much perfect for the required left-eye right-eye dual-imagery needed. And, of course, both channels would be Full HD.

Panasonic is trying to get in early with this proposal because, according to Panasonic's Masayuki Kozuka, "Standards wars, patent monopolies and the like would seriously interfere with the widespread adoption of any 3D image standard." Certainly no-one wants a repeat of the HD format war.

Now, hurry up TV manufacturers.
