Andy already caught a glimpse of Philips' LED-Backlit TV at IFA this year, but now it's official. Most importantly, that means we have release and pricing information for the 42PFL9803H as it is to be called.

So, what will your £2,299 estimated selling price get you once the TV hits the retail channel later this month? For a start the 42PFL9803H's use of LED backlighting allows it to claim a 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. Normally we'd scorn on such claims, but the 128-region local dimming system Philips uses should put up a better show than traditional across-the-board backlight adjustment.

As would be expected the 42in set packs a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, Philips' latest and greatest Perfect Pixel HD image processor as well as Perfect Natural Motion backing up 100Hz and 24Hz display modes.

Unsurprisingly for a Philips TV, Ambilight (in this case of the Spectra 2 variety) makes an appearance enhancing the TVs output yet further. Connectivity is fantastic, too, with a quadruplet of HDMI 1.3 ports and an Ethernet connection enabling the 42PFL9803H to stream media over a network.

Frankly, given the Philips Aurea 42PFL9903H, a non LED-backlit TV costs somewhere in the region of £2,500, it's amazing to see Philips' LED-backlit set launching at such a low price. Plasma, watch your back!
