Thin TVs seem to be a regular theme at IFA this year and though Sony has lead the way with its Bravia ZX1, Philips' Essence range is likely a good deal more practical - not to mention affordable. Measuring 38mm thick - the Sony is 9.9mm by the way - the Essence will initially be available in just 42 inches as the 42PES0001 and will feature a connection and power breakout box to help create that sleek physique. This means you'll only have to contend with a single wire going to your TV and should also aid easy access to your video connections.

It's not just a pretty thing, however, there's substance too. Inside an equally thin bezel is a 1080p Full HD panel with 100Hz motion processing, Philips' Pixel Perfect HD Engine and a 66,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio - no LED LUX 2,000,000:1 backlighting here, then.

Other noteworthy features include DLNA compliance, an Ethernet port, three version 1.3 HDMI ports, a USB port for viewing photos and playing back music in MP3 and all the usual bits and pieces like a Freeview TV Tuner. There's also a 2x15W Soundbar included that sits just below the TV and, of course, optical audio outputs in case you want to connect something a little more substantial.
