The Hitachi UT42MX70 definitely impressed us with its impressive 35mm thinness but there's always room for improvement. If you aren't going to up the performance, then upping the size of your sets is always a good second best option, and that exactly what Hitachi is doing with the introduction of the UT47 which adds, surprisingly enough, a 47in screen to the mix.

Two versions are available, although the difference is pretty slight. The UT47-XP770 offers a built in 250GB iVDR hard drive and the option of a white casing (instead of the standard black) over the otherwise analogous 47UT-XP700. Those 47in panels are, of course, of a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, and are specced equal to the 42, 37 and 32in versions in the same range.

That gives the UT47s a 10,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 100Hz processing and 24fps playback. Connectivity wise there is a single HDMI port on the set itself, which in turn connects to a dedicated AV receiver unit - optional extra purchase as it may be. This, as you may recall, is how the Ultra Thin series can be as such. Speakers, too, are omitted from the svelte chassis.

Neither pricing nor UK availability are mentioned thus far, but in Japan the sets should be available from the 26th of September, so the UK release will hopefully be sometime soon after that.
