When it comes to claiming a World's something-est title there seems to limit to the lengths a company will go to. JVC for example is touting its 46in LT-46SL89 and 42in LT-42SL89 as the world's thinnest LCD TVs… with integrated tuners. That's not so say that at 2.9in at the thickest and 1.5in at the thinnest parts the TVs are fat by any means, just that the title is a tad superfluous.

Both sets offer 1,920 x 1,080 Full HD resolutions, unspecified contrast ratios (we never believe them anyway) and a specially-developed backlight panel which is apparently 40 per cent smaller than conventional LCD backlights. Supposedly this thinner backlight technique means the TV can be made thinner without compromising the evenness of the backlighting, which would usually require the addition of more CCFL tubes, or some method of diffusing the backlighting. In simple terms, it's a no-compromise solution.

Connectivity is good for both TVs, with three HDMI ports, two component inputs an S-Video input and a PC (VGA) connector. Touch-sensitive front controls, USB picture and an illuminated remote are also touted.

JVC says the LT-42SL89 and LT-46SL89 will be available in July with approximate retail prices of $1,899.99 (~£960) and $2,399.99 (~£1,220), respectively. No UK information, but we expect to see a launch here in due course.
