While some of Philips' lower end HDTVs haven't always thrilled us its flagship Ambilights have been consistently excellent and its latest line look set to continue their top notch reputation.

The 9600 'Ambilight FlatTV Series' (to use its full name, including bizarre spacing) is a simply beautiful range of Full HD (1080p) LCDs in 32in, 37in, 42in and 47in sizes and are the first models to feature Philips' latest version of its famed Perfect Pixel picture processing engine.

Amongst the highlights we'll see with this are a doubling of processing power to 500m pixels per second and a palate of 2.25 trillion colours along with 100Hz scanning (to minimise image blur) and a zippy 2ms response time (ditto). Philips' modestly named 'Perfect Contrast' system which uses an adaptive intelligent backlight control and 'Dynamic Contrast' enhancements get a look in too with these proprietary tech heavy monsters.

In real terms Philips claims this results in a whopping 30,000:1 contrast ratio - 4x up on previous Philips models - though we give little credence to this measurement in general. A full cinephile pleasing 1080p 24fps mode does bear pause however and features across the entire 9600 line along with four HDMI 1.3 inputs, plus the famed Ambilight atmospheric/annoying integrated lighting system and 'invisible' speakers.

The 32in 32PFL9603D (£999), 37in 37PFL9603D (£1,499), 42in 42PFL9603D (£1,799) and 47in 47PFL9603D (£1,999) will all touchdown in June so there's not long to get saving. Just when the Pioneer G9 Kuros thought they were going to have an easy time of it...
