OLED is coming, just rather slowly and with extreme RRPs - but you can't deny this is impressive...

Appearing on Walt Mossberg's All Things Digital conference - home to Gates' and Ballmer's multi-touch Windows 7 demo - most recently is Sony CEO Howard Stringer and he's got our tongues wagging with talk of a 27in OLED and the unveiling of a 0.3mm thick OLED panel (below).

Details were understandably thin on the ground for both, but hopes are Sony will produce an 'exclusive' short run of the 27in OLEDs for the ultra-high end market (read: it's expensive) next year. A 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio is purported but, as Pioneer told us last week, figures mean nothing after a while - you've either solved it or you haven't.

As for the 0.3mm model - which is about the width of a playing card (the format requires no backlight) - again specs were lacking, but it is certainly slimmer than the already malnourished 3mm 11in OLED the company displayed at Ceatec last year. That said I wouldn't be surprised if it was also equipped with the same 1024 x 768 native resolution.

So will 2009 be the year this tech takes off? Hint: yes, if your wallet is many, many, many times thicker than the average OLED...
