While Sky's expanding HD content is to be applauded it is about time the traditional terrestrials followed suit and it looks like Channel 4 is suddenly leading the way.

A December 2007 launch is planned for Channel 4 HD - making it the first of the 'Big 5' stations to offer a full simulcast of its entire channel. Of course Channel 4 imports a large number of US shows which no doubt makes this process easier but it has been relatively quiet with its HD trials compared to both the BBC and ITV so this comes as something of a (welcome) surprise.

Speaking about the announcement Rod Henwood, C4's New Media Director, said "Channel 4's aim is to offer our viewers maximum flexibility in accessing our high quality programmes and content at a time and in the format of their choosing. HD is a fast growing consumer technology and we believe our viewers will welcome the opportunity to watch their favourite Channel 4 shows in high definition."

Of course the downside in all this is that - with no Freeview HD service yet available - viewers will need either Virgin's V+ or Sky's HD service to access the channel. Yes, both of these cost money but what is the alternative?

Did you plan to watch SD on that HDTV you bought last year for the World Cup forever...? Oh you did! Fair enough...
