It's a pretty established truth that when it comes to black levels, plasma TVs rule. The best we've seen, comes in the form of the Pioneer 508XD quoting 16,000:1, which John agreed was pretty spectacular. So reading through a press release from Samsung claiming it has managed 500,000:1 from a LCD TV game me a bit of a shock.

Nonetheless, this is exactly what is reportedly on offer from the new F9 series, the feat being achieved by the use of LED backlighting technology, about which we have raved before. Unfortunately, the imagery isn't quite as impressive. Adding to the 70in set previously rumoured, Samsung will also be releasing a 52in TV, which will hopefully have a more affordable price point.

Elsewhere three HDMI ports and USB 2.0 connections are on-board and the 52in model will feature Auto Mount, which allows tilt adjustment of the TV via the remote when wall mounted - coolness reified. Even better, unlike Sharp's high-contrast set the F9 isn't a prototype and both the 70in and 52in models are expected to be commercially available with models on sale before Christmas - in Korea at least. The rest of us can just pray for that lottery win (even if we don't play - that's why we're praying, not just waiting).
