Slimmer, Lighter, Bigger Aquos Spotted

With IFA on the horizon, it seems that the game of consumer electronics one-upmanship has started and the latest models in Sharp's Aquos line certainly back up that suspicion. By changing the layout and reducing the number of components, the new Aquos TVs are purportedly 20 per cent lighter and 25 per cent slimmer than their predecessors and offer a smaller footprint to boot.

The four models available in the D64U series are the (mouth watering) 65in LC-65D64U, 52in LC-65D64U, 46in LC-46D64U and a 42in set the model number of which I'll let you guess. All the sets have full 1,920 x 1,080 (1080p) panels offering a 10,000:1 contrast ratio (with dynamic backlight) a 4ms response time (using a proprietary Fine Motion Mode) and claimed 176 degree viewing angles. Also on hand is Sharp's proprietary image enhancement suite, which aims to improve sharpness, colour reproduction and all the other usual refinements we've all come to expect from high-end TVs.

Connections come in the form of an HDMI, component and composite port at the side, two HDMI, one component, one composite and an RS-232 jack at the rear. The latter could be useful if you happen to have a room control system or universal remote – and who doesn't want one?

Apart from the 65in model which hasn't received pricing and will be launched in September, the rest of the range is set for release this month and will retail with MSRPs of $3799.99, $2699.99 and $2099.99 for the 52in, 46in and 42in models respectively.
