When I outed Philips' next gen Ambilight HDTV in July little did I realise that 'Aurea' didn't actually refer to the television itself...

Instead we have learned today that Aurea is, in fact, Philips' name for the successor to its incredibly successful Ambilight technology and it looks like a quantum leap forward integrating the lighting directly into the frame.

Unfortunately, beyond the naming Philips isn't giving much away simply saying "Aurea brings light and color to life in an unparalleled, highly visual and immersive fashion, drawing the audience into the full emotional experience Ambilight offers. Aurea marks a departure from the world of television as we know it today". None of which really helps.

Instead the big unveiling will come at IFA on 30 August when Philips will launch Aurea with a film by director Wong Kar (Incorrect Automobile? Self Love?) Wai called Seduction by Light.

So is Aurea just Ambilight in a neater package which "won't have that huge white piece of board anymore" as our original tipster described it...? Guess we'll have to wait and see. Or not, since I kinda wrecked the tele offshoots already.
