While we certainly admire LG for being the first company to announce a hybrid HD DVD/Blu-ray player the BD100's hefty £1,000 price tag suggests it is in need of some competition – which is exactly what Samsung is about to provide.

Confirmed back in April, Sammy's BD-UP5000 – also known as the 'Duo HD' – will also bring HD DVD and Blu-ray playback, but unlike the LG's BD100 it will offer full interactive functionality (and thus certification) on both formats.

Since the initial announcement Samsung has also confirmed that its player will support online extras for HD DVD and Blu-ray via an Ethernet port and can output movies at 1080p in a cinema native 24 frames per second and scale all the way up to 60fps for faster videos. Impressive stuff.

Vitally however we now know the BD-UP5000 will launch in either October or November and carry a 400 euro premium over that of a regular Blu-ray player (like Sammy's BD-P1200, above). At the current time this would place the UP5000 somewhere around the £800 mark, but with HD player prices tumbling monthly it could be even less come launch.

Competition, isn't it marvellous...
