With the many recent troubles HD DVD has been suffering it desperately needs a shot in the arm... and now it has one.

Interactive online features are on the way for HD DVD discs this month which will enable owners to download trailers, participate in online polls and even re-edit movies as long as owners hook up their players to a broadband connection.

Zack Synder/Frank Miller brilliant but weirdly accented flick 300 (Ssssparrrrta!) will be the first title to make use of these options when it arrives towards the end of this month with users allowed to rearrange the scenes of the flim and even post final edits of the movie online for others to watch. Quite how useful this will be in a narrative sense is debatable but I sure would love the option to do the same thing to The Phantom Menace...

Closely behind 300 will be Blood Diamond which will offer viewers the opportunity to participate in online polls once they have seen the movie – the results of which can be sent directly to the film studio. Further, more advanced, features are also set to be announced at a later date.

Naturally, HD DVD creator Toshiba is hoping this addition will boost the fortunes of its format which has taken something of a pasting from Blu-ray in recent months and also been snubbed by monster rental firm Blockbuster.

Given that the majority of consumers don't even watch the extras on most discs however some may doubt the value of this addition but when you're in a format war – one which you currently appear to be losing – every little helps...
