We've been waiting for this, waiting and yearning, but plasma master Pioneer's much anticipated eight generation screens are finally here.

In an unusual step, the company announced its latest and greatest to the European market first (we're liking it even more) and promises models which have been rebuilt from the ground up.

To this end Pioneer is proclaiming black levels 80 per cent deeper than before, richer colours and sharper details. Two Full HD (1920 x 1080) lines will be launched, the top of the line 'PRO' and not-so-very-far-behind-it 'PDP', in 50in and 60in variants. The PROs will come with 'Digital Colour Filter III Plus' (a colour reproduction technology) and both series sport remarkable 20,000:1 contrast ratios (roughly 10x that of your average HDTV) and DVB-T digital tuners.

Unfortunately neither line will be around until the autumn and even then word is you're going to need very deep pockets.

If this all sounds a little too rich for your blood, three other 8th gen lines with XGA resolutions will be arriving in June. All will come in 42in and 50in sizes with superb 16,000:1 contrast ratios and DVB-T digital tuners. The rest is left to our overly excited imaginations.

In this world there are those who lust after LCD and those who pine for plasma, but – for me the latter wins every time. Now gimme, gimme now!
