If Sky is honest with itself it would have to admit its movies channels have been something of an impenetrable bird nest for a long time but now it has had a much needed spring clean.

Effective immediately, Sky's 10 standard definition channels have lost their 1-10 postfixes to instead by categorised by genre. As a result subscribers will now find Sky Movies Comedy (303), Action & Thriller (304), Family (305), Drama (306), SciFi & Horror (307), Classics (308), Modern Greats (309) and Indie (310).

The exceptions to the rule are two Sky Movies 'Premier' channels (301 and 302) which will debut four to five new movies every week that will then filter into their respective genres. The others are Sky Movies 'HD1' and 'HD2' which will show a cross section of high definition movies from across the genres (including Premier).

The big question is whether this move will simplify anything because categorising pictures is no easy task. Is 'Shawn of the Dead' Horror or Comedy? 'The Matrix' SciFi, Action or classic? I suspect the answer will be different from person to person.

That said if you're in the mood for a general theme rather than a specific flick now you will be able to narrow the search to a few channels rather than scan the whole shebang which makes life a little easier. And that, after all, is surely what this is all about...

Update: It's not all good news however - as eagle eyed reader Keith points out - these cateogory introductions do hide the fact Sky has dumped its two Cinema channels dropping the total number from 12 to 10 (plus two HD channels). So it's not all good news...
