Also on show was a hybrid camcorder with both a hard disk and DVD drive for recording digital video. At first it seems like a strange combination – why would you want a DVD drive in a camcorder, when you’ve already got a hard disk to record on? Surely your just adding size, weight and mechanical parts to the equation?

Of course with a bit of thought, the potential advantages of a camcorder like this become apparent. Not only does it mean that you can go away on holiday without having to carry spare tapes or discs with you, but it also means that you don’t need to use a PC to get your footage off the hard drive. You can copy the video direct from the hard drive to a DVD and then play it back in your DVD player.

So, you have the extensive recording capacity of a hard disk camcorder coupled with the simplicity and compatibility of a DVD model. The down side is that this is a standard definition camcorder rather than an HD device – perhaps the next model will be hi-def.
