Hitachi was also keen to show off its one terabyte hard disk, complete with perpendicular recording. The drive is a five platter device with 200GB per disk – Seagate has also announced a 1TB disk with only four platters, but it looks like Hitachi is going to be first to market.

A 1TB single volume is definitely a huge step forward for data storage. A simple four volume NAS appliance can now potentially provide an unprecedented four terabytes of storage. I’m not going to make any comments about no one ever managing to use that kind of storage – I’ve been around long enough to know that you always run out of space no matter how much you have.
