When I got my first look at LG’s prototype 32in 3D LCD television at IFA earlier this year I had no idea the year’s most progressive company would churn out a retail model so quickly, but perhaps I should have known better…

In keeping with its relentless onslaught on the LCD and mobile phone markets LG has come up with a final version of the M4200D which looks to have improved on what I witnessed in just about every conceivable way.

The most obvious difference to the official M4200D is its size with the panel increased from 32 to 42 inches, but there is also a ‘Full HD’ (1,920 x 1,080) resolution in there now and 1600:1 contrast ratio while the 500cd/m2 brightness remains the same. Interestingly, the quoted response time of 8ms is double that of the prototype but to be honest once you drop below 10ms response time is no longer the be all and end all of picture quality anyhow.

As for the 3D side of things it is once again grounded in ‘lenticular’ technology which means there is no need for embarrassing bespectacled attire of any kind. Unfortunately LG doesn’t reveal the limitations on its final 3D system (you had to be 4m away using the prototype) or what resolution it will be (VGA previously).

Naturally the company wasn’t forthcoming about a price or release date either, but I’ll keep my eyes peeled since I wouldn’t put anything past LG this year…
