Perhaps one of the most innovative things I've run into (not literally) at this year’s IFA is LG’s ‘Flatron M4200D’…

For such a boring name the M4200D does a wonderful thing: it projects three dimensional video without the need for glasses. No information was being spilled by LG about how it created such a wonder but the 32in screen did indeed do a pretty good job of making the on screen action spill out into the room.

The downside is that the company specifies ‘an optimum viewing distance’ of 4m and by ‘optimum viewing distance’ I found that meant anything much either side and it simply didn’t work. Still, sidestep left or right at 4m and not only does the image remain three dimensional but you can actually move around it, allowing greater perspective of the left or right hand side respectively. We’ve all wished for such technology as teenagers watching Porkies…

As for the hard specs themselves the 3D filter is of the lenticular type while the screen has a 500 nit brightness and offers 25 perspective views. The resultant 3D resolution is only an approximate VGA but it certainly bodes well for the future.

Obviously digital cameras can only photograph in two dimensions and trying to capture a 3D image was utterly futile so you’ll just have to take my word for it.
