If you haven’t read Riyad’s piece today which thoroughly demystifies HDTV then I suggest you head straight over and take a look. If you have then I’m sure you’ll suddenly be gravely aware the pitfalls many consumers fell into when they rushed out to buy new televisions before the World Cup.

According to a report by the Office for National Statistics this week retail sales leapt 2.1 per cent in the three months to June compared to the same period last year and the increase was largely driven by HDTV sales in anticipation of another glorious England failure.

That duly arrived (I’ll never believe again – though Gerrard, Lampard, Terry, Ferdinand, Joe and Ashley Cole, Wayne Rooney, Aaron Lennon and even Theo Walcott should be at their best in 2010… damn you faith) and now many will be realising they really had no idea what they were buying. In fact if you poll around friends and family you’ll still spot that many don’t realise you need a High Definition source (such as Sky HD or next generation HD DVD or Blu-ray media) to watch High Definition content.

This is a shocking state of affairs when you consider market research group GfK is quoting television sales specifically to be up 80 per cent in the week ending 27 May, compared to the same period last year.

So if you’re one of the (possibly lucky) few not to blindly splash the cash on a new HDTV before doing your homework I suggest you go copy from Riyad’s blood, sweat and tears. As for the sheep… tut-tut.
