Now the World Cup has actually kicked off the number of High Definition TV announcements were seeing has temporarily eased. Of course ‘eased’ is a relative term in this instance used to describe a return to normality from absolute chaos, as indicated by the fact that Sharp has just unveiled no less than eight new models.

All identical on from the outside, the latest Aquos share a great deal of commonalities including 1,366 x 768 resolution 1080i capable panels, 1200:1 contrast ratios and 6ms response times. The eight sets themselves are then broken down into four brackets each containing a 32in and a 37in model.

Cheapest amongst them will be the LC-32GA8E and LC-37GA8E which each offer a single HDMI port, PC Input and the latest Sharp picture and audio boosting technologies: Dynamic Contrast Enhancement (DCE), Clear Voice Function (CVF) and Auto Volume Control (AVC). The LC-32GD8E and LC-37GD8E take this up a notch by adding an integrated Freeview digital terrestrial tuner.

Above these four we have the LC-32GA9E and LC-37GA9E which add TruD Technology to smooth video image playback, offer 2x HDMI ports and 2x 15W speakers while – you guessed it – the LC-32GD9E and LC-37GD9E mimic these features exactly but add in that Freeview digital terrestrial tuner. All eight will debut towards the end of this month though prices were not released.

I can’t help but think – when you break it all down – that what we’ve really got here are four new TVs not eight. Still, why keep product lines simple when you can confuse the consumer with endless virtually identical options?
