LG is Big on LCD

LG has just taken the wraps of its latest LCD TV range – and there’s not a tiddler in sight. The smallest of the three sets in the new LC2D range comes in at a hefty 32in, with the largest achieving a plasma-scaring screen size of 47in. Perhaps even more worryingly for plasma, the prices of these LCD giants is looking very competitive too. We don’t have a final price on the 47in, but the 37in ‘middle man’ is only slated to sell for a measly £1400, while the 32in should be available for around £1,000.

All three of the new screens are fully HD Ready, meaning they’ve got HD native resolutions, digital and component high definition connections, and compatibility with the necessary 720p and 1080i HD formats.

They all also boast the very latest incarnation of LG’s so-called XD Engine image processing, designed to improve brightness, contrast, detail and colours while also reducing signal noise. f

Of course, every TV and its mother has a system similar to this these days, so it remains to be seen if LG’s effort actually does anything special. Certainly we’re dubious about LG’s claims that XD Engine ‘takes low or standard resolution signals to near high-definition levels’ – but then maybe we’re just too cynical for our own good…
